Traffic safety and the rural road environment: Assessing the impact of combined roadway conditions on crash incidence

This study was designed to explore the combinational effect of roadway and traffic characteristics national rural roads on fatal serious-injury crashes in Namibia. Namibia, like many other countries Southern Africa, experiences high numbers high-severity crashes, particularly its road network. The applied Generalised Poisson regression models analyse dataset. results indicate that are almost always influenced by a combination factors, not simply presence single factor. For example, higher-order roads, higher proportion heavy vehicles stream had highest absolute impact crash levels, but this heightened when hilliness, wider lanes, surfaced shoulders operating speeds were also present at same time. On lower-order light again compounded unpaved shoulder widths speeds. Overall, lane widths, especially found with each other, linked subsequent increase higher-severity levels roads. shows conclusively development safer relies implementing minimum safety standards for individual design elements, understanding relationship between features design, parameters safety, recognise which coincidences factors affect risks different classes road. knowledge can result more careful so likelihood is reduced.
